Tunxi Old Street is not long, but it is the most complete preserved commercial street in China. It has the architectural style of the Song and Ming dynasties. It is also the most popular commercial street in Huangshan City. There are plenty of shops to buy some local specialties, such as the Four Treasures of the Study and the local teas. Here is also a good place for accommodation and shopping. Sit outside the cafe, look at the old houses, and leisurely spend an afternoon.

Like other ancient streets in China, what are worthy of seeing in Tunxi Old Street are folk customs, local architecture and traditional handiworks. Tunxi Ancient Street has 4 streets, mainly selling jades and Four Treasures of Study (writing-brush, ink stick, ink slab and paper).
Anhui-style Architecture
Tunxi Old Street was a merchant area. The structures date back to the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) eras. Similar to the architecture of Hongcun Village, the ones in Tunxi Old Street are Anhui-style architecture as well. In the comprehensive application of architectural sculpture art, stone carving, wood carving, brick carving, appears magnificent.

Tunxi's old ink factory is famous regionally. It still produces ink blocks in the traditional way. Ink blocks and the other Treasures of Study (pallets, calligraphy pens, and paper) are on sale, along with traditional seals which can be carved to your specification. You can see how these commodities have been produced for centuries.

From the bus or train station
You can take a taxi. It takes about 5 minutes.
From Huangshan Airport
It costs 30 RMB from the airport to Tunxi, and the airport express bus costs 6 RMB.

Tunxi Ancient Street lies in the center of Tunxi district in Huangshan City. Starting in the west from Zhenhai Bridge, a stone arch bridge crossing the river which was built in Ming Dynasty and ending up in the east with the tablet of memorial archways, it added up to 1273 meters long. Being well preserved, there are shops row upon row, with buildings simple and elegant. It is a commercial street only for pedestrians, with the building style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, having the reputation of "The moving picture by the river on Pure Brightness".
Fast Facts
Set up in Song dynasty, Tunxi Ancient Street, became a distribution center for goods and materials to Huizhou during Ming and Qing dynasties. With shops, it looks densely and compactly. The shops, workshops and residences form an organic whole, keeping the characteristic and operation layout of ancient store such as "front shop and back workshop" or "front shop and back house". The building is only 3-stoery-high, usually of tenon structure, stones based, bricks laid, wall built like a horse's head, small green tiles, wood carvings of Hui style, ancient shop signs, red-lacquered building with double-eaved roofs. They are simple and elegant, magnificent and clean. The pavement is 5 to 8 meters wide, laid by red flagstones of large size. With clear grain after a rain, it is as clean as a picture. Walking on this street, there is no noise and no disturbance, free and natural far, far away. It seems to be back in the ancient times, triggering off fantastic reveries.
Interesting to Know
The shop name in the ancient street, has a lot of culture meanings, embodying the speciality of that the merchants in Huizhou are scholar-merchants. Among which, there are shops with more than a hundred years history, such as "Tongderen" Medicine Shop, "Tonghe" Steelyard Store, "Chengdexin" Sauce and Pickle Shop, the production and display as well as its operation are still with ancient customs by now.
